Graduating and internships at
BPE projects

BPE projects is always looking for young talent brimming with new ideas. Are you looking for an internship or graduation internship in the technical business world? Then we are looking for you!

You get the chance to work on a fun assignment with a lot of responsibilities. We will always try to guide you as best as possible to a successful end result. And after your internship or graduation, there is always the possibility of a long-term contract as a part-time or full-time colleague.

At BPE projects we have enough interesting developments for mechanical engineering, technical business administration, marketing and logistics enterprising students. We can set up the assignment for your internship or graduation together, so that you can also take into account the competitions that you must be able to demonstrate.

Shredding and pumping grass

BPE-Projects has started a project together with a customer to realize a factory in Australia where a grass species will be used for the extraction of proteins. This process involves the extraction of proteins, sugar water and fibre. A special type of grass from the land is used for the extraction of these substances. In practice, there are no/little activities involved in processing the grass with the aim of winning protein. Technology development is still at a low level.

The main objective of the graduation project is to reduce the size of the grass and make it pumpable by means of a cutting technique so that fibers are reduced and cell walls are broken open. The grass contains mainly water-soluble protein. With each step in the reduction of the grass, water will be released with dissolved proteins in it. One of the trades for a profitable process is to ensure that the water with protein remains in the process during cutting. After pumping, the separation of the nutrients takes place, but this part falls outside the scope of the graduation project.

For the project, the methodical design process was completed with a choice determination in the form of a principle test. The different cutting techniques provide insight into the process and the various effects that must be taken into account.

The four main cutting techniques are shredding, rotor shredding, cutting and grinding. These principles are described and explained with the advantages/disadvantages. The cylinder mower has been tested for the principle test based. This technique scores well for capacity, cutting size and potential more economical compared to the reed cutters that where tested last year.

The principle test was carried out on leeks, and not on Australian grass, as these could not be shipped to the Netherlands due to logistical circumstances. From the test it can be concluded that the combination of speed, feed and cutting distance are very important for a smoothly running process. The cutting distance between cage and anvil should be as small as possible and the feed speed constant in combination with the speed. The required torque when calculated linearly is 3400 Nm. The blade sharpness, cutting gap and reduction of the speed due to non-constant feed speed, make it very likely that a (much) lower torque is required. Calculating the capacity comes down to a power of 60 kW, which is relatively normal for a machine on this scale.

The final design is a reel mower that has been developed with an electric motor (3-phase). It is enclosed with a rubber band of gears. The supply of the product is realized with a food-grade conveyor belt, the pre-shredded grass will be transported to the reel mower. Fixing is realized by a roller that presses the grass and fixes it on the belt.

Workflow improvement by artifact development

Due to the larger amount of projects BPE reaches a point in which they need to scale up their operations to keep up with demand. Before increasing the amount of staff BPE wants to look into possibilities to make their current workflow more efficient. One of the largest and most time consuming parts of BPE’s operations is the digital procurement and assembly part. After analyzing this part of the workflow I found that the current software that is used for this operation causes that a lot of human labor is needed and that the current database system was not directly connected to the rest of the digital structure. This causes the procurement and assembly workflow to be less efficient than that it potentially could be. After a comprehensive potential solution consideration I landed on creating a new software artifact for the procurement and assembly process in Excel with the help of VBA and SQL. VBA is a programming language integrated in Excel that that can be used to automate multiple tasks. Through VBA a SQL database can be connected to the artifact to preserve larger amounts of data. With this software structure I created
  1. an artifact in which projects can be created
  2. materials with all corresponding data can be saved
  3. contact data can be saved
  4. different prices can be saved for every material
  5. order papers can be automatically created
  6. material lists can be created in which material logistics and finances can be tracked
  7. a complete financial project overview page can be viewed
In this way I have created a setup for a solution that can make the procurement and assembly workflow more efficient. For it to work perfectly however there is still further development required.
